Here’s an interview with choreographer Brian Enos about the inspiration behind his new ballet, Alice in Wonderland:

  1. What drew you to creating a ballet based on “Alice in Wonderland”?

I’ve always loved the story of Alice in Wonderland. It’s rife with interesting and eccentric characters, inviting the audience to reconnect with their childhood imagination and suspend their disbelief. I love stories that allow the audience to escape reality for a moment and experience a fantastical world where anything is possible.

  1. What “Alice” character do you identify with?

While I connect differently to each character in the ballet, the Cheshire Cat is one of my favorites. Aloof and nonsensical, but ultimately benevolent and helpful to Alice on her journey.

  1. As we’ll be having many children joining us, what message do you want your production to convey?

An overarching message in the story of Alice is to keep an open mind and not take things for granted. Not everything is what it seems, but by approaching the world around you with curiosity and wonder, you can learn a lot and experience great adventures.
