Why Don’t We See More Ballets With The Care Bears?

When I think of classic ballet performances, certain names like Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev come to mind.  One name that seems to be curiously missing from the list are the Care Bears.

Yes, the same cuddly little creatures from the 1980s were also trained dancers as evidenced by the 1988 movie The Care Bears Nutcracker Suite.  Not since Barbie in the Nutcracker (and I do not make that up either), has one of our great dance works been so fully realized.  We see the grandeur of Funshine Bear’s grand battement en cloche and the graceful arabesque of Love-a-Lot Bear.

I await The Care Bears Giselle.
